HOW ADVANCED IS YOUR GUM DISEASE?

There are three stages of gum disease: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. Each stage is a progression of the next and each requires immediate treatment to prevent damage to your gum tissue, teeth, and bone.

The earliest stage of gum disease, gingivitis, occurs when the bacteria in your mouth infect the gum tissue. Marked by irritated, bleeding gums, the damage to your periodontal tissue is easily reversed with treatment.

Periodontitis, the second stage of gum disease, damages the connective tissue that supports your teeth, widening your periodontal pockets. Gum recession is the most common complaint.

In the final stage of the infection, advanced periodontitis, damage to the gums and connective tissue worsen and the gum pockets widen until teeth begin to loosen from the sockets.
